At least three Japanese automakers recalled millions of vehicles worldwide due to dangerous airbags that may burst and discharge metal shrapnel, USA Today reported on June 23.
An estimated 3 million vehicles around the world are being recalled by Honda, Nissan and Mazda after they were informed by the Japanese airbag supplier Takata that other vehicles may not have been addressed by the earlier recall. Reports said the affected airbags manufactured by Takata in the early 2000’s deteriorate due to moisture exposure and improper storage. At least two deaths and six injuries were linked to the issue in Honda vehicles in 2009.
Defective airbags in vehicles increase the risk of individuals sustaining debilitating injuries during accidents.
