An adult and a baby were killed and five children suffered injuries after the vehicle they were riding in rolled over in Gaines County, Everything Lubbock reported on January 9.
Reports said the fatal single-vehicle accident happened before 8:00 a.m. on U.S. Highway 385, according to the Department of Public Safety (DPS). The GMC Yukon Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) operated by Silvia Balderas, 38, rolled over after she lost control on the slippery road, which news reports said would be covered in black ice. The vehicle, which contained six children, reportedly rolled over several times. Balderas was thrown from her vehicle and died at the scene of the accident. Her 2-month-old baby was brought to Seminole Memorial Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The five other children in the vehicle were all treated in the hospital, one of whom sustained critical injuries.
