Toyota, Chrysler, Honda and others have issued a recall of 7.8 million vehicles in the U.S. due to potentially dangerous airbags manufactured by Takata, CNBC 25 reported on October 20.
Several automakers are issuing regional airbag recalls in some parts of America where the humidity regularly is high. Toyota said they are notifying owners of several different models of 2002 to 2005 vehicles that have Takata airbags installed in the front passenger seat. The recall was sparked after incidents of bursting airbags in Florida and Puerto Rico were reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). A follow-up investigation pins the issue to a defective airbag inflator which is causing the explosion and expulsion of metal shrapnel in some cases. Dealers are advised to disable the front passenger seat airbag in the affected vehicles while waiting for replacement parts.
