Ford Explorer
Ford introduced its flagship mid-size SUV in 1990 as a replacement to its Bronco II. Often credited with taking the Sports Utility Vehicle from a niche market to a viable alternative to traditional cars, trucks, and minivans, the Ford Explorer nonetheless has been associated with a number of serious flaws. These problems include tire and rollover issues, which have resulted in a number of injuries and fatalities.

Rollover Risks
Like all SUVs, the height of the Ford Explorer combined with its comparatively narrow wheelbase make it fairly unstable, potentially leading to a higher rollover risk. According to studies conducted by a number of private organizations and governmental agencies, SUVs are much more likely than traditional cars to be involved in rollover accidents. Moreover, rollover accidents account for approximately 10,000 deaths every year – or about a third of all auto fatalities.

Firestone Tire Controversy
The other major controversy surrounding the safety of the Ford Explorer came in 2000, when the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) discovered that there was an abnormally high number of tire failures in accidents involving Ford Explorers. The fault was determined to be with the Firestone tires that the Explorers came equipped with.
The tires would experience tread separation, in which the outer tread would separate from the tire, causing a massive and sudden loss of pressure. This in turn would increase the risk of rollovers.
