The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently did a crash test on small SUVs in order to make a list of the safest ones.

Eight different small SUVs were tested and four of them ranked very high. The Ford Escape, Volkswagen Tiguan, Nissan Rogue and Mitsubishi Outlander all ranked with the Top Safety Pick Award.

This means that the vehicles received a good report on front and side protection after an impact and protection against whiplash if struck from behind. In order to receive the award, the vehicles must have the option of Electronic Stability Control, ESC, which helps drivers remain in control during emergency maneuvers.
